Energy Options

Renewable energy could be used to provide some or potentially all of the power needed for the operation of the reservoir and for the recreational facilities within the site. Renewable energy can be provided in a number of ways, such as through the incorporation of wind turbines, or through the provision of boilers that use biomass fuels, such as wood chippings.

The aim is to minimise the carbon footprint of the development and activities around the site and include eco-friendly buildings where appropriate.

Feedback from the public: Respondents to the spring 2008 consultation were supportive of the need for renewable energy to be used. Feedback from young people in particular encouraged more sustainable energy use.

Before developing the visitor facilities at the site, a full study of alternative sources of renewable energy is proposed to cover water and wind turbines, wood fuel, solar power, and use of ground heat pumps. Factors to be considered during the assessment will include likely effectiveness and local environmental impacts. For example, a wood fuel boiler could be fuelled by timber from the management of the adjacent woodland areas, as is the case at Queen Elizabeth Country Park.
