Free Save-a-Flush Bag Offer
Do you remember
putting ‘Bricks’ in the toilet?
Those of you who are old
enough may remember
the National Drought in
1976 when everyone was
encouraged to put bricks in
their toilet cisterns to save
water whenever the toilet was
flushed. The graph below shows
the impact this initiative, as well
as a few others, had in reducing
overall consumption in 1976 and
1977, the following year.

A very sharp fall in overall demand
of 10% in that year ensured that
major water shortages were avoided.
Following continued reinvestment in
replacement mains, reduction in
leakage and reduced demand from
commercial businesses, consumption
and consequently the volume of
water we abstract from the water
environment, has reduced by 20%
since the 1980s. However, household
usage is rising as we buy more
household appliances and pay more
attention to personal hygiene. Up to
35% of the water we use is 'flushed
away' so we need your help to stem
this rise by installing a 'modern day'
brick - the ‘Save-a-Flush bag’, in your
toilet cisterns.
These ‘Save-a-Flush bags’, which are
easily installed, are available, free of
charge, to domestic households within the Portsmouth Water area of supply,
with full installation instructions,
either by contacting the Company
on 023 9249 9888, or by filling in the
form below. Alternatively,
post a request giving your name and
address to Portsmouth Water, PO
Box 8, West Street, Havant,
Hampshire. PO9 1LG.
