Portsmouth Water Celebrates 20 Years of RoSPA Gold with Order of Distinction
At Portsmouth Water, safety isn’t just something we do — it’s part of who we are. For two decades, we’ve committed ourselves to creating a safe, healthy workplace, and we’re proud to say that this has once again been recognised with a prestigious RoSPA Order of Distinction. This award marks 20 consecutive years of achieving RoSPA Gold, a rare milestone in the field of health and safety.
The RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Health and Safety Awards are among the most respected and recognised safety schemes in the world. With entries from organisations across the globe, they celebrate those who go above and beyond to protect lives and prevent harm — not just to employees, but to contractors and members of the public too.
Reflecting on this achievement, we asked Ian Adams, a leader in Health and Safety at Portsmouth Water, to share his thoughts on what it takes to build and sustain a culture of care:
We don’t think of safety as just another business priority — priorities can change. We see safety is something we consider, always.
That mindset runs deep. True leadership in health and safety cannot just be about measuring compliance against policies and procedures. It requires diverse knowledge and experience of the business operation to understand the environments our people work in.
Working together to get it right
For us, success has come from listening to our teams, learning from experience, and making sure everyone feels empowered to learn and improve. This helps us create guidance that’s clear, practical and rooted in the reality of our day-to-day work. Real progress happens when everyone is involved. We work closely with our strategic delivery partners to make sure our standards are aligned, and our goals are shared. It’s a genuinely collaborative effort — and one we’re committed to continuing.
This shared commitment is visible right through the organisation, with every member of our Board now signed up to our Health and Safety Policy. That kind of support makes a real difference.
Ultimately, awards are a fantastic way to mark celebrate our progress — but the most important outcome is that our people go home safe and well. We’re proud to report that we’ve had no RIDDOR-reportable incidents in the past three years, and we’ll keep working hard to maintain that record.
But it’s not just about our history — it’s about where we’re going. The health, safety and wellbeing of our people is something we’ll keep striving to improve, every single day.
Congratulations to everyone across Portsmouth Water who has played a part in this achievement — and here’s to continuing upholding safety within our place of work.
